Kaytee Fiesta Gourmet Variety Diet Gerbil & Hamster Food

Quality Recommendation : NOT RECOMMENDED

We struggled rating this food but in the end, there are cautions for you to know about. The reasons for this are a few. First, this diet has too much corn in it.

Not Recommended

Corn is the #1 ingredient and we should remember that corn is typically a filler with low nutritional value. Then we have ground corn, and then cracked corn. Yikes!

Secondly, there are added sugars in multiple forms, Dried Cane Molasses, Honey, and Dextrose. This is on top of the ingredients that already naturally contain a good amount of sugars including Raisins, Dehydrated Carrots, Dried Bananas, Dried Papaya, Dehydrated Sweet Potatoes, and Dehydrated Apples.

Too much sugar can cause your furry friend to gain excessive weight which is not healthy for them when fed in significant amounts regularly.

Lastly, the protein level is lower than the 16% minimum we recommend for hamsters. There are some good whole ingredients but there are better foods out there for your hamsters and gerbils.

I know. It’s disappointing as this food with some slight changes to the recipe could be excellent. Until then, we suggest weighing the pros and cons by looking at other options before selecting a hamster or gerbil food.

The average cost of this pet food is $4.00 per pound.

Feeding Instructions

Hamster or Gerbil 2 Tablespoons For best results discard any uneaten portion and clean food dish before next feeding. Fresh water should be available at all times. The following feeding amounts can be used as a starting point for 1 pet. Adjust the portions to maintain proper weight and if additional pets are fed. Transition Instructions When introducing a new food, begin with a mixture of “old and new” food, gradually increasing the amount of new food over a 7 – 10 day period. This will prevent digestive upsets as well as allowing your pet to adjust to something new.
